Friday the 13th: Yule Blessings Holiday Spell

Friday the 13th: Yule Blessings Holiday Spell December 13, 2019

There are many people who believe Friday the 13th to be unlucky. However, I have found whenever such a Friday rolls around, it can be a very auspicious day for magick. So in the spirit of the holiday season, I thought I’d share a Yule Blessings spell which focuses on sharing 13 blessings. The December holidays can be fraught with consumerism and worry about buying the “right gift.” Which is why I believe this is a great time to cast a Yule blessings spell with the extra energy of 13 behind it.

Yule Blessings: 13 – The Number of Angels

According to The Secret of the Tarot, if you combine the numbers 1 and 3, the number 13 indicates “through your angels you are connected to the ascended masters and their ability to help you manifest your desires.” While I don’t work with angels in my own practice, I can see where this idea can be beneficial to those who do.

And in the Tarot, the Magician’s card is numbered as 1 and the High Priestess as number 3. Combined to create 13, you have the energy of skilled knowlege and fertile abundance on your side. If you do not want to combine the numbers 1 and 3 in such a way, remember that the 13th card is Death. And while many people regard that as unlucky or frightening, it actually represents change and transformation. The death of one thing, so that new opportunties have room to grow.

My point is, using the number 13 in magick can be very powerful. When combined with the energy of both the 13th day and holiday season, I believe the Yule Blessings spell will accomplish its work. And honestly, you could perform this spell any time of year on the 13th day of the month, using the fortuitous energy of the number as a base for your intention. Even if you cannot perform this spell on the 13th day, you can still create these blessings to send forth.

Yule 13 Blessings Spell

This spell can be performed any time of the year, but because of the gift giving nature of the December holidays, Yule (or Christmas if you celebrate it) is a great time to do this working. The 13 Blessings Spell has a lot of room for interpretation and variation. What I’m providing is a framework. I hope you will take the concept and make it your own.

You Will Need (but you can do whatever you want, really)

A representation of the number 13: This could be the 1 and 3 cards of a Tarot Deck or the 13th card. This could be a “13” birthday candle. This could be a 13 drawn on a piece of paper. You get the idea. Do what works for you.

A sheet of paper or 13 strips of paper: You could also use gift tags, small index cards, construction paper, etc.

A candle with the color which represents the blessing(s) sent: If you want to send abundance to 13 people you might use a green candle. If you want to send peace and harmony, you might use rose or pink. You can use one white candle. You could get a pack of birthday candles and each one represent a different person instead of an intention. Do what feels or works best for you.

A writing utensil: Pen, pencil, markers, paint pens, etc.

Bergamot essential oil: To boost the energy and efficacy of the spell (or choose an essential oil which works best for you. Remember to use a carrier oil, such as coconut or almond, on your hands when working with an essential oil).

Performing the Spell: The idea here is to send forth 13 blessings. How you do this is up to you. These could be 13 blessings you would like to see manifested in your own life or that of your immediate family. Or 13 blessings for 13 different friends, colleagues, employees or extended family (one per person). The blessings can be simple things like good health, abundance, joy, inspiration, creative energy, etc. Things most people are wishing for one another off the cuff throughout the season. The point here is to do so with intention.

Set up: Use whatever altar space feels natural. If you are performing this for Yule or Christmas, consider doing this before a holiday tree or display of some kind. Play whatever music you might feel is appropriate to raise energy for your working. Set up your Tarot cards, 13 number candle or created representation of the number 13. As you do this, focus on the energy or spirit of the number, asking it to partner/ally with you for this working.

Prepare the candle(s) by dressing it with the bergamot oil. Feel free to carve a symbol of your blessing intention if that seems right, beforehand. Focus on your blessing(s) intention as you prepare the candle. When you are ready, place the candle on or before your altar and have the other items ready.

Light the candle while focusing on your intention. Then, taking your paper(s) and writing utensil write either your name (if the spell is for yourself) or the person(s) for whom the blessing is intended. Now, you will write out the blessing/wish/intention. If it’s one intention for yourself, then write it out 13 times. If it is an intention for 13 different people, then write one for each recipient. Do you have several intentions for a small number of people? That’s fine, just make sure the sum total equals 13.

Meditate on the intention for as along as feels appropriate. If you are planning to share the intentions with the recipients, then use this time to attach them to a gift or place them in a holiday card. Otherwise, you can place the slips of paper (or single sheet) into an envelope. Seal it and write whatever feels appropriate on the front to indicate what it contains. You can create a sigil or some other symbol. Then, place it on or under your altar to hold in trust through the coming year. Later, you can burn the envelope at Samhain.

Allow the candle to burn out if able. Speak whatever words are appropriate to release the spell such as “So mote it be” or whatever is appropriate for your path or tradition.

**Optional — 13 Small Gift Package/Ornaments: If you’d like to attach your blessing to a gift being given, you can attach the small strip of paper to the package and attach it to a present or present it with a card on a small party favor. You could do this by using gift tags, by writing the blessing on the back. You can term these as “wishes for the coming year” if Yule blessings doesn’t sound right to you. If you’re industrious, you could put your 13 slips inside home-made fortune cookies and pass them out on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.**
