ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith: For One Election, Every Black Person Should Vote Republican

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith: For One Election, Every Black Person Should Vote Republican April 22, 2015

When you think about it, this argument just makes sense!

Stephen A. Smith says the Democrats know they have the black vote in their pocket, and Republicans know that virtually nothing they say will convince black people to vote for them. So neither side tries, and politics go on as usual.

Here’s his bright idea: Just for one election, every black voter should vote Republican. Just to throw them off. Just to “upset the apple cart” and get people’s attention. Just to show that things won’t necessarily go on just like they’ve always been.

And once the politicians are paying attention, they might actually see some progress on issues they care about. Then black people could stop calling themselves “disenfranchised,” because both parties would actually be trying to cater to their concerns.

Smith actually says the reason the majority of black Americans vote Democrat is based on a false assumption. The Democrats didn’t have over 90% of the black vote until after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Why?

because President Lyndon B. Johnson was a Democrat, black America assumed the Democrats were for it. Do you know that since 1964, black America hasn’t given the Republican party more than 15% of its vote? Here’s what that means: Black folks in America are telling one party, ‘We don’t give a damn about you.’ They’re telling the other party, ‘You’ve got our vote.’

…one party knows they’ve got you under their thumb. The other party knows they’ll never get you and nobody comes to address your interest.

Smith says black voters should do the same thing in politics as when they buy a house or a car: shop around!
