letter_and_spirit_8If you are looking for a deeper understanding of Scripture from a trusted source, look no further then the Letter & Spirit journals. These journals are released annually by the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and are composed of articles by St. Paul Center founder Scott Hahn and numerous other leading names in evangelization today. Currently the series is up to eight volumes as listed below.

Volume 1 – Reading Salvation: Word, Worship and the Mysteries

Volume 2 – The Authority of Mystery: The Word of God and the People of God

Volume 3 – The Hermeneutic of Continuity: Christ, Kingdom, and Creation

Volume 4 – Temple and Contemplation: Presence in the Cosmos, Church, and Human Heart

Volume 5 – Liturgy and Empire: Faith in Exile and political Thinking

Volume 6 – For the Sake of Our Salvation: The Truth and Humility of God’s Word

Volume 7 – The Bible and the Church Fathers: The Liturgical Context of Patristic Exegesis

Volume 8 – Promise and Fulfillment: The Relationship Between the Old and New Testament s

In each of the volumes Editor Scott Hahn compiles multiple articles. These are in depth theological compositions, containing ample footnotes leading the reader into even deeper study. Another interesting feature were the inclusion of essays, some being translated to English for the first time, by such notables as Joseph Ratzinger, Hans Ur Balthasar, St. Thomas Aquinas and F.X. Durwell. Earlier volumes in the series also contained book reviews but this feature was removed in Volume 6.

You really have to see these journals to appreciate them. A sampling of the articles you will find include:

The Sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis and Hebrews: A Study in Hermeneutic Faith by James Swetman, S.J. from Volume 1

Vatican II on the Interpretation of Sacred Scripture by Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J. from Volume 2

Christ, Kingdom and Creation: Davidic Christology and Ecclesiology in Luke-Acts by Scott Hahn from Volume 3

Jesus, the New Temple, and the Priesthood by Brant Pitre from Volume 4

Worship in the Spirit of Logos: Romans 12:1-2 and the Source and Summit of Christian Life by Jeremy Driscoll, O.S.B from Volume 5

The Modernist Crisis and the Shifting of Catholic Views on Biblical Inspiration by Jeffrey L. Murrow from Volume 6

Scripture, Worship, and Liturgy in the Thought of St. Basil the Great by Stephen M. Hildebrand from Volume 7

The New Temple, the New Priesthood and the New Cult in Luke-Acts by Michael Patrick Barber from Volume 8.

These journals are a must for the library of anyone with a desire for in-depth Scripture study. The essays are well written and the content in each volume is exceptional. With eight volumes in the series and more to come, there is plenty here to sink your teeth into. This is an ideal and trusted resource for those well versed in theology as well as for those with a budding interest.
