Independence Days Challenge: Week 4

Independence Days Challenge: Week 4 June 2, 2009

Things are pretty busy recently with friends from out of town visiting, and friends about to move away from town, so we haven’t had a lot of time for the house. Mostly I’ve been focusing on getting the garden planted. I did talk to my friend Sam about making a bunny run under the cedar tree where nothing really grows anyway, and she said it would probably be fine, so I just need to finish cutting out the bottom branches to get started on that.

1. Plant something – Planted cucumbers, tomatoes, marigolds, peppers, basil, dahlias, zucchini, and pumpkin plants. I seeded lovage, calendula, radishes, and nasturtium,
2. Harvest something – Lettuce
3. Preserve something – nothing this week
4. Reduce waste – All this socializing has meant gifts, so I’ve been focusing on giving handmade gifts and wrapping them with recycled wrappings.

5. Preparation and Storage –nothing much this week.
6. Build Community Food Systems – not really, I’ve been pretty busy with friends from out of town and the previously mentioned wedding.
7. Eat the Food – We had a salad, though I want to try cooking with lettuce sometime. I wonder if it would be easy to hide in something like muffins or a frittata. I’m always looking for more ways to include a diverse array of vegetation in our diet in a way that the kids will actually eat. Veggie muffins, veggie eggs, veggie meat….
