Independence Days Challenge: Week 6

Independence Days Challenge: Week 6 June 15, 2009

We haven’t had a lot of time this week for the garden or house since we were hosting a Midsummer campout this weekend on my in-laws property. We had a lovely time, dancing and eating and healing together on their beautiful land. I would have had some lovely pictures if my camera hadn’t been out of batteries! So on to my weekly update of my adventures in food and energy independence. It was mostly baby steps this week.

1. Plant something – radishes
2. Harvest something – Lettuce, chives, oregano, peas
3. Preserve something – oregano
4. Reduce waste – I found out my backyard neighbor collects metal to sell and make money, so I happily got rid of some large heavy metal poles and the like by giving them to him, rather than stuffing them in a dumpster.
5. Preparation and Storage – I bought some good camping gear, a sleeping bag for my older daughter, and camp chairs. As a kid my family vacations were flights to Florida to see my grandparents and Disney World. I want us to have vacations with a much smaller economic and environmental footprint than that, so buying camping gear is an investment in rethinking family recreation. Plus camping bags are good for keeping warm if the power goes out.
6. Build Community Food Systems – Nothing much here. I talked to a Meyjer greeter about why I bought organic peaches. I talk up how much tastier and healthier organic produceis these days. I find it has a much better reception than saying it’s good for the environment or needs less oil to produce, and I figure that if people buy more organic food it sets our country up for a more sustainable and local future, even if people don’t realize it.
7. Eat the Food – We had more salad, the cut and come again lettuce seems like an infinite source of salad greens. We also got the chance to buy some wonderful local pork when we were visiting my husbands parents.
