Independence Days Challenge: Week 7

Independence Days Challenge: Week 7 June 22, 2009

1. Plant something – Just weeding.
2. Harvest something – Peas, lettuce, chives, basil
3. Preserve something – more oregano, dried in my dehydrator, and then I use a pestle to crush the herb through a sieve into a bowl. I don’t even have to peel the leaves off the stem that way, and you can control how big the bits are by how big the holes are.
4. Reduce waste – My DH and I brought up our hand tools from our damp basement cleaned off all the rust, oiled them, and put them into clear, watertight plastic storage containers.
5. Preparation and Storage – I bought a big bag of long grain rice.
6. Build Community Food Systems – We’re getting our first CSA share today! I’m extra excited because it’s the Michigan State University CSA, which I helped to start when I was a student there. It’s like coming full circle for me.
7. Eat the Food – I made gaspacho, though the tomatoes were on sale at Meyjer, the basil was all my own. I cannot wait until our tomatoes are in. The peas haven’t gotten as far as getting cooked, they’re just gobbled right off the vine.
