Embossed raisin lid ornament

Embossed raisin lid ornament December 7, 2009

I was pulling the lid off of my organic raisins the other day, and I noticed it was shaped a lot like an ornament, so I thought I’d give it a try at turning it into one. I flattened it out, and with a bamboo skewer, I drew some ornament like decorations on it. Then, to make it a little sturdier, I mixed some cadmium red paint and some gloss medium and painted it over the ornament to fill in the depressions made by the skewer. It seemed too thick, so I wiped it away, but it looked bad. I tried adding some water to thin the mix and Voila! It started flowing into the patterns without obscuring them. I let it dry, and punched a hole in the pull tab to hang a hook from. I like how it turned out and I’m really happy I’ve discovered that the metal lids on food containers work so very well for embossing. I was particularly proud of myself for pulling in Creative Every Day’s theme for the month, recycling!
