Raven Sculpture

Raven Sculpture December 14, 2009

I’ve been working on this raven for a while. There’s a Native American story about Raven stealing a firebrand and bringing light to the world. Before that he’s white, and after he and all his progeny are stained soot black. My raven is holding the firebrand and is in the process of being turned black. He’s mainly made out of corn husks I dried from some summer sweet corn, along with some copper wire, a bone, and some odds and ends of paper and buttons and gears. The branch is a root of a rose bush I pulled from my front yard and saved for it’s cool shape. It’s my first serious attempt at sculpture (or whatever you would call it) He’s pretty fragile on his perch, I’m still working on securing him better to it. By himself he’s pretty sturdy, he’s been dropped a couple of times and my kids got a hold of him once, so I think he’s hardier than he looks. I like how he turned out, and I learned a lot from the process. I’m planning on making a smaller one, to fit into a box I made for this one that he outgrew.
