Domestic Landscapes

Domestic Landscapes July 24, 2010

I have become obsessed with Bert Teunissen’s Domestic Landscapes. These images of people in their homes, surrounded by their belongings and their lives are so compelling. I’ve been looking at them for two days now, and I can’t stop.

These homes, these landscapes are lived in, worked in. There’s very little in common with House Beautiful magazine here. My house is a workplace as well, and I think that’s what I find so compelling. I have a really hard time finding images of homes that resonate with what I think of when I think of a living space. Certainly, I enjoy riffling through the pages of Martha Stewart Living while I’m waiting to pay for my food and toothpaste at the grocery store. Realistically that’s never going to be my life. I don’t even want that life. These photos embody a livingness, an aliveness that those magazines will never have.
I love how many of these photos show tables with a simple tablecloth on them.
I loved the crosses hung in the corner of so many of the German houses.
I loved the aquamarine blue painted rooms.
I loved the combination of cheap plastic and old metal.
I feel the need to paint a room robin’s egg blue. I’m sure Martha would approve.
