Small Canvases

Small Canvases June 14, 2011
I’m challenging myself to make some paintings in a small size. These canvasses are only 8″ x 8″. It’s weird working with smaller brush sizes to create the abstract parts of the painting, and then working with truly tiny brushes for the details. I think I’m going to do a theme of elemental women. I think the first one is going to be a mermaid.

I’m finding it interesting how quickly I can achieve a nearly finished work. The one above was mostly finished in an afternoon. I’m having a hard time with getting the hands modeled the way I want, but I had to stop so the colors didn’t get hopelessly muddied.

I’m not sure what this one is going to be yet. Mostly I was just using up paint and smearing it around. I hate wasting paint when I’m done painting, so I just mess around on blank canvasses with it. Sometimes I get great stuff, and sometimes it just becomes vague texture behind the next layer.
