Thrifty Art Thursday: Leaf Art

Thrifty Art Thursday: Leaf Art October 13, 2011

Today I wanted to share such a simple thing. It’s wonderfully available, free, and easy.

It’s leaf art.

I’ve been really inspired by Andy Goldsworthy and his art. It’s amazing what you can create with the things around you. I really look forward to working more with this art form, and the best part is that my two girls can get in on the action too. I think it would be great to use as a form of biodegradable graffiti, and I know all the people who walk past my house to the community college have been enjoying our little art projects. Because it’s outdoors it forces me to work in public space, which is actually kind of cool.
Mel’s guidelines to making leaf art:
1. Look at color and form and let that guide you.
2. Be patient with this. It takes time to arrange, and often the wind will wreak havoc with your work.
3. Along with patience, staying present in the moment and the process is really important.
4. Think in terms of simple shapes and forms. Symbols work well, as do simplified shapes.
5. If you think of each leaf as a pixel in your painting it will help you size it appropriately.
If you make some leaf art send me the image and I’ll post it!
