Out of the Mouth of Babes

Out of the Mouth of Babes August 24, 2011

This morning at the children’s Mass I asked the children why it’s easy to pull weeds while they help with yard work at home. A student answered the question quickly: weeds don’t have deep roots. I spoke about how weeds are easy to pull but a big oak tree with deep and strong roots will withstand almost anything.

I then asked what is important if you’re building a tower with blocks. An older kid answered correctly, you need a strong foundation.
In the spirit of World Youth Day’s slogan, “be rooted and built on Christ,” I said that both strong roots and a strong foundation are important to keep something alive and standing firm.
I then asked a simple question. When it comes to our faith, in whom should we be rooted? Who should be our foundation?
None of the kids answered. Faces went blank. Perhaps they thought it was a trick question since the question was so easy.
All of a sudden, in the back of the church the hand of a K-4 student went up. I didn’t call on the little girl because K-4 students are taught not to answer my questions since they usually simply start talking about their doggie or little brother. Since I didn’t call on her when I looked in her direction, the little girl just blurted out loudly, “Jesus!!!”
The youngest person at Mass got it and said it. I love it.
