New experience: Teaching your teacher

New experience: Teaching your teacher February 16, 2012

Today I returned to my high school for the annual Diocesan Catholic School Teacher Institute.  I taught a session on the Gospel of Saint John.

My new (an unique) experience began when two of my three high school religion teachers entered the classroom to attend my session. My calculus teacher also came.  The classroom where I taught had been my history teacher’s class, Doc, who influenced my decision to study history.

When one of my religion teachers arrived, I said to him, “I think I need to sit down, and you need to be up here.”  He laughed.

What an experience.  I felt grown up.  I felt thankful for my teacher’s dedication which allowed me today to be back at my high school teaching.  My sophomore religion teacher was the first person to ask me if I had ever considered the priesthood.  My senior religion teacher was my first philosophy teacher, introducing me to Plato and Aristotle.  He best prepared me for college and eventually seminary.  My calculus teacher challenged and expanded my mind even though I had a limited interest in mathematics.

I wonder what was going through their minds?  It was a great experience.
