Religious majorities in USA by county

Religious majorities in USA by county July 12, 2012

I have always loved maps and statistics.  I came across this map this morning in the world of facebook and was intrigued by it.  Maps like these are always interesting, especially the statements one may draw from them. (click on map to enlarge it and read its legend)

The Catholic Church has the majority of faithful in the highest number of counties (1,231) followed by the Southern Baptists with 1,217.  After all, 25% of Americans are Catholic, the single largest Christian Church in the country.

The Southern Baptist Convention’s stronghold is the southeastern quadrant of the United States except Florida where there has been high Latin American immigration and northeastern transplants, and also southern Texas and Louisiana, both Catholic regions long before the United States ever existed.

The Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) have an uncontested majority in Utah as well as in neighboring counties of neighboring states.

The Northeast is predominantly Catholic, more than likely due to the waves of Catholic immigrants.

Lutherans are a majority in the Midwest, more than likely due to German immigrants who settled in those states.
