I once heard that Jesus and disciples must have always been laughing and having a great time. Since Jesus was all-knowing, he must have known every joke in the book.
Being a priest without a good sense of humor is an unbearable task. Being a Christian without exuding joy is a flaw. A priest said to me some years ago, “remember we are a religion of redemption, we are a religion of joy. We live rejoicing always in the great things Christ has done.”
For several years I have been a fan of comedian Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. When I heard he and Cardinal Dolan would host an event at Fordham University on humor, I was intrigued. Colbert is a practicing Catholic who teaches Sunday school. At the event last night he called the Church the “infallible sign of the presence of God.” He also said, “I love my church – warts and all.”
