Prayer and Fasting for Syria

Prayer and Fasting for Syria September 2, 2013

On the Vigil of the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, (September 7th) Pope Francis has called for a worldwide day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria.

As the situation in Syria worsens and the United States contemplates taking military action, Pope Francis reminds us that, “there is no use of violence which leads to peace, war begets war, violence begets violence… there is a judgment from God and from history over our actions from which we cannot run.”

The Pope called on the international community to provide “clear initiatives for peace based on dialogue and negotiation for the wellbeing of the Syrian population.”

His words “No more war!” were greeted by a cheering crowd at Saint Peter Square.  He continued, “peace is a very precious gift that must be promoted and protected.”

The Pope has invited the 1.2 billion Catholics as well all people of good will to unite in prayer and fasting for peace this upcoming September 7th.  I pray the Lord will have mercy on us, on Syria and especially the Christian communities in Syria.
