Georgia Bishops on Executive Action Regarding Immigration

Georgia Bishops on Executive Action Regarding Immigration November 21, 2014
Last night I had hundreds of people I love and care about going through my mind.  I shared in their joy knowing that soon they will be allowed to apply for deferred action.  When hearing of the estimated number of people who will benefit from this executive action, five million people is simply a big number.  It is a different experience to hear about this executive action and know individuals who will be positively affected by it.  Individuals who love their families, their church and appreciate the opportunities they have received in the United States, opportunities their home country could not provide.
Below is the introduction and a link to the Pastoral Statement issued by the Catholic Bishops of Georgia, Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, and Gregory Hartmayer, Bishop of Savannah.
“As Catholic bishops in Georgia, we have long expressed our concern for the families divided by the constraints of an immigration system that all recognize as broken. Strong and united families are fundamental to our society but we see so many families torn apart in the enforcement of the current immigration system. We, thus, welcome President Barack Obama’s executive action intended to assist some immigrants to remain in the United States, participate in family life and contribute openly to our society.”
Here a link to a report from Warner Robins where four of my past parishioners at Sacred Heart, Warner Robins are interviewed.  They are part of a local committee that assists people on immigration issues and advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.
