Drawing on the unused side of my brain

Drawing on the unused side of my brain June 24, 2014

I bought a copy of the Drawing on the Right Side of your Brain workbook a few months ago, thinking that it would give me a nice mental break from proofreading and editing. I’ve already got the brainless physical labor side of things covered with housework, but sometimes I find myself awake and idle and not able to face any more words.

About a week after I finally got around to trying my hand at the first two activities in the workbook, Simcha Fisher asked if anyone would be interested in blogging their way through the book with her. So here I am! The regular book and the workbook are supposed to cover all the same material, but some of the exercises are different from one to the other, so I’ll just follow along as well as I can. Apparently the book asks you to try to draw someone from memory. I’m grateful that isn’t in the workbook, because I already know I can’t hold faces in memory! They just come out as jumbled collections of features, and the more I try to remember any particular aspect, the more warped and unrecognizable my mental image becomes. I did do the other two exercises for this week.

Here’s my self-portrait:

And here’s my hand drawing:
