What do you do when you run up against your limitations? How does the short person accept that they will never use the top shelves, the clumsy person resign themselves to a lifetime of bruises, the diabetic find peace with a lifetime of dietary vigilance, the mentally ill deal with their own unreliable perceptions?

Does it make a difference whether your particular shortcoming is one that is visible and clearly non-volitional? In a lifetime of wearing glasses, no one has ever told me to ‘try harder’ to see some far off detail. But people who suffer depression are commonly told to ‘count their blessings’ and ‘cheer up’.
