Professor to Give Lecture on Bishop Henry McNeal Turner October 28, 2011
Dr. Andre E. Johnson, the Dr. James L. Netters Assistant Professor of Rhetoric& Religion and African American Studies at Memphis Theological Seminary, will give a lecture titled, “The Rhetorical Trajectory of a Prophet: Understanding Bishop Henry McNeal Turner” as part of the Second Tuesdays Brown Bag Luncheon Lecture Series at Memphis Theological Seminary on November 8 at 11:15am. Johnson’s lecture will focus on how Turner appropriated prophetic discourse throughout his career and examine the nexus between rhetoric race and religion. Dr. Johnson will also sign copies of his books, An African American Pastor Before and During the American Civil War, Volume 1 and The Chaplain Letters, Volume 2. The books consist of writings that cover Turner’s career from 1859-1865 and are part of the Literary Archive of Henry McNeal Turner published by Mellen Press.
