Holy rhythmical hip-hop, Batman!

Perfect entrance for a post about gospel rap, huh? Holy hip-hop. Get it? Never mind.

Having older parents—what most young adults would call grandparent age these days– which they finally are–I had the luxury and the privilege to grow up on gospel classics. Aretha Franklin (she did gospel), Shirley Caesar, The Mississippi Mass Choir, The Clark Sisters, Yolanda Adams, Bebe and Cece Winans—the Winans family. What ya’ll young folk know about that?

Those classic tunes could always be heard throughout our home on Sunday and any day of the week rather, but I still had to venture out of my home and hear other music—secular music, which was very pleasing to my ear—especially hip-hop.

The rhythm, bass and lyrical content of real hip-hop music was soothing and exhilarating—just a general rush of adrenaline every time I listened to it. Good hip-hop—not the garbage that some listen to nowadays, has the ability to challenge thought, tell a good story and spread a meaningful message—its poetry with an infectious beat.
