The Cry of the Poor

Here’s another status posted by my friends at The Friendship Room. 

This morning I sat with a very young women, she is heroin addicted , she was sold by her own parents to a man several years ago- she came running to find me , yelling my name down the street,after she escaped a man trying to strangle her for 20.00.
To say it is difficult to see such pain is an under statement – raw suffering , is rampant .Let us all remember, everyone has a story, not all choose their path.

I just want to remind everyone that this kind of thing exists. When you see a drug addict, you have no idea how they got that way. When you say that people on drugs should be cut off from any welfare benefits, you say that people who were sold into slavery as children and can’t help their addiction now should be punished right along with people who take drugs for fun. If you make distinctions in your mind between the deserving and the undeserving poor, remember that you, personally, have no reliable way of telling which is which, and Jesus never said that we had the right to discriminate between them anyway. Whatever we decide to do about drugs and poverty in this country, we have to start from the understanding that for many, it’s not their fault.

Judge not. You have no idea what cross your sister is carrying. Help her carry it. This is the Law and the Prophets.
